Acne Treatment

Acne is a common and distressing skin condition which affects many of us in teenage years and frustratingly can persist into mid-adult life. A number of factors are involved in the origin of acne including hormonal, genetic and lifestyle contributors.

Unfortunately, it is very common for strong oral medications to be used to control acne, which may leave a legacy of long-term side-effects.

At Skin Resus, we have a range of extremely effective and safe treatments for acne and acne scarring.

What causes acne?
Successful treatment of acne combines therapies which target all of the underlying causes. These include:

  • Hormonal influences on the production of sebum (oil) in the skin which lead to
    • increased oil production and
    • blocking of pores
  • Increased numbers of the skin bacteria
  • Blockage of the follicle and bacterial growth lead to inflammation, formation of pustules and cysts, and subsequent scarring

We recommend a combination of topical acne treatment and light therapy for best results. Our doctor will advise on the best topical therapies designed to reducebacterial numbers, settle inflammation and unblock pores.

Acne Light Therapy
Therapy with high intensity LED light, such as the Dimalux light system, is a genuine breakthrough in the treatment of inflammatory acne, and safely and effectively improves skin by targeting and reducing bacterial numbers, reducing inflammation, and stimulating new collagen formation to give a clear and rejuvenated complexion.

The best results are gained by combining light of different wavelengths. Dimalux therapy combines 415nm blue light and 650nm red light:

  • Blue light targets and destroys skin bacteria
  • Red light acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory reducing redness, cyst formation and scar potential, and stimulates new cell formation and collagen production

Acne light therapy is offered as a 4-week course of treatments, with treatments performed twice weekly.

Treatment of Acne Scarring

Fraxel Laser
Fraxel laser is a new class of 'fractional resurfacing' laser which is showing excellent results in the treatment of acne scarring of all severities. Fraxel safely targets and stimulates deep dermal collagen production and removes old epidermal pigment cells to lift depressed acne scars and give smooth skin texture and colour. Fraxel Laser has demonstrated excellent safety in all skin types, and a short recovery period. Best results are obtained with a course of 3 - 5 treatments.

Anti-Acne Diet

A recent groundbreaking study has established that diet has a significant impact on acne.  The Anti-Acne Diet is a higher protein - low GI diet and has been developed based on the study findings*. It may be useful for acne sufferers either wishing to avoid treatment, or as an adjunct to other therapies.

Here's a brief overview:

  • Eat lean red meat 3 - 4 times and fish twice a week (and red meat for lunch daily);
  • Choose low GI carbs: wholegrain breads, high-fibre cereals, pasta and legumes;
  • Aim for 3 serves of fruit and 5 serves of (low GI) vegetables a day;
  • Use canola and olive oil
  • Avoid sugary foods and drinks and limit takeaway, white bread, cakes and biscuits.
