Truly Effective Skin Care

Deciding on an effective anti-ageing skin care regime can be confusing. There are literally thousands of creams, serums, lotions and potions on the market, most of which seem to offer the secret to eternal youth. The reality is that you can spend a lot of money on expensive creams that make little or no difference. There are relatively few ingredients that have been put through rigorous medical testing and have been shown to be effective against skin ageing.

The good news is that medical professionals at Skin Resus have done the homework fro you! We are committed to finding skin care that is effective and affordable, and you can be confident that the products we stock are proven to be just that.

Retinol

Retinol or Vitamin A was one of the first skin creams scientifically proven to have an anti-ageing effect on the skin.  Studies have shown that Retinol can help reduce wrinkles, reduce acne, exfoliate dead skin cells, diminish pore size and reduce pigmentation. You need a reasonable amount of retinol (0.3 and above) in the cream or serum to get results. If the retinol ingredient is listed way down the bottom of the ingredient list it probably means it’s included at tiny levels and is unlikely to be effective.

When starting any Retinol product, it is best to start gently (by using only 2 – 3 times per week and building to nightly use) to avoid irritation such as redness and flaking. We recommend SkinCeuticals Retinol (available in 0.5 or 1% concentrations) or Aspect Dr Exfol A Plus, which combines 1% buffered Retinol with alpha hydroxy acids (AHA).  Once you have been using a Retinol product nightly for 4 weeks or more, a Retinol peel can be a great way to boost your results.

Vitamin C

There is now a huge amount of evidence to support Vitamin C's use as a powerful anti-ageing skin serum.  Its many effects include:

an increase in collagen synthesis, which helps to thicken the skin;

Will any Vitamin C do?

To be effective Vitamin C needs to be in sufficient concentrations (greater than 5%) and in a stable form. Ascorbic acid, which is the purest form of Vitamin C, is highly unstable and deteriorates with exposure to air and light.

At Skin Resus we use and recommend the Active C serum by Aspect Dr. This is a relatively new Vitamin C derivative, which is more stable and less irritating to the skin, and evidence suggests that it is a more powerful booster of collagen production.  It’s also Australian made and very affordable.

Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) is the latest multi-tasking cosmeceutical that is gathering a reputation as a true skin care hero.  Its effects include:

Aspect Dr Multi B serum contains 8% niacinamide combined with a range of B group vitamins and some potent anti-inflammatory botanicals. Perfect for sun-damaged, pigmented or acne-prone skin, it gives a boost to any skin care regime. We’re addicted!

Sunscreen

Without a doubt the most effective anti ageing cream on the market is a really good sunscreen.  So what makes a great sunscreen? It must be a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.  It must be non-greasy and not leave your skin looking pasty white. And for the harsh Australian climate, it really needs to be at least an SPF 30+.

Depending on your skin’s needs, we recommend the following sunscreens:

Actinica SPF 30+  This is a liposomal sunscreen, and this delivery system means that the ingredients stay on the skin and are not absorbed into the skin.  It’s great for those who spend a lot of time outdoors, especially swimming, but it’s non-greasy and works very well under makeup.

Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30+  This sunscreen combines a physical sunscreen (it has 7% transparent zinc oxide) with a chemical sunscreen, so you really get the best of both worlds. The protection of a zinc with the creaminess and lightness of a chemical sunscreen.  This is great to use in place of a moisturiser and perfect for under makeup.
