What is Laser Vein Treatment?
Leg veins before and after laser treatment*
Laser vein treatment is often performed following an initial treatment with sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is preferred as it tends to require less treatments and be more long lasting than laser therapy. In many cases our Doctors will treat vessels with sclerotherapy first, then use Laser therapy to treat any vessels too small to inject.
Laser treatment is best performed in lighter skin types and untanned skin. Dark skin carries more risk of hyper-pigmentation (darkening of the skin) or pigment loss (white spots) following treatment.
What is laser vein treatment like?
After your initial consultation, the veins to be treated are identified and pulses of light (laser) energy are delivered along the length of the vessel, larger veins first. Each pulse feels like a sharp sting, and most patients report little discomfort. The tip of the laser is cool, so the area is cooled before and immediately after treatment. Some redness and swelling is often seen, which should disappear within a few days. Generally, the veins will turn a purple colour that resembles a small bruise, and then gradually fade within 5-10 days. Some redness or purple discolouration may persist for several weeks, or longer. The redness will gradually lighten to a pink tone, and then to a lighter, more natural colour.
What should I expect after the laser treatment?
Multiple treatments are usually required to see good vein clearance, and these are performed 6 - 8 weeks apart. Sclerotherapy and laser treatment of leg veins may not erase all imperfections in the skin, most patients are very satisfied with the results. It is important to remember, however, that this treatment does not deter the normal effects of ageing and will not prevent the occurrence of new spider veins. Many patients come in for repeat or follow up treatments every 3 - 5 years, as new vessels occur.
